Wind load and snow load for tent halls

19 January, 2023

With regard to the climate in Poland it is important to take into account atmospheric conditions which may have a negative impact on the technical condition of the structure. Tent halls are exposed to wind load and snow load which means that it is important to keep that fact in mind during the construction of buildings. We invite you to read this article in which we introduce the most important information about safety indicators for steel structures.

How do wind and snow load affect tent halls?

Atmospheric factors may have a harmful impact on the technical condition of the building. At that time, it will be unsafe to use it and the lives of people inside may be in danger. With regard to it, there are particular legal standards in force – PN-EN 13782, PN-EN 1991-1-4 (wind) and PN-EN 1991-1-3 (snow). They determine parameters which construction elements should meet in a given region of the country.

Speaking of these aspects, it is important to point out current snow zones in Poland that indicate maximal load which the construction can be exposed to:

  • I – 70 kg/m2,
  • II – 90 kg/m2,
  • III – 120 kg/m2,
  • IV – 160 kg/m2,
  • V – more than 160 kg/m2

Meanwhile, there are only three wind zones in Poland: I – 22 m/s (areas that are below 300 m a.s.l) and 25 m/s (areas that are below 500 m a.s.l.); II – 26m/s and III – 22 m/s (areas below 300m a.s.l.) and 30 m/s (areas below 900 m a.s.l.).

Snow and wind impact on halls safety

Keeping in mind areas and load levels makes it possible to choose between appropriate construction elements which will prove themselves in the best way for tent hall construction in a given region. This aspect determines the durability of the entire building at a large extent, no matter if it is used during all seasons of the year or if it is just temporary. As a result, it has an impact on the security level, that is why taking into account snow load and wind load is of great importance. Compliance with standards that are in force in this field and taking into consideration determined zones contributes to the structure’s optimal durability and positively affects the safety of the building.
